More hamstering

As you all probably remember, Irish singer Ryan Dolan suggested the infamous hamster was hovering when we had a little chat with him at the Irish party the other day. It was a good suggestion, but we felt the issue needed further investigation, and who else to turn to than to the boss himself, Ruler of All Things Eurovision (or something), Christer Björkman?

Just like young mister Dolan, Björkman seemed a bit befuddled by the question, but eager and intrigued to find out. After thorough consideration, he reached the conclusion it had to have a swallowed a copy of the record of his very own Eurovision entry in Malmö back in 1992, I morgon är en annan dag. This could actually be the case. Or could it have attacked one of the paintings the 'she' in the lyrics of his entry painted, that he never got to see? No wonder he never got to see them, really, if the hamster had the munchies all the time...

As we were about to thank Christer for his kind cooperation in solving this important mystery, he said he had to show it to his colleague, viewing room producer Stuart Barlow, and called him over. He suggested the hamster had been "hit by an iron" - which sounds harsh, but might well be the truth.

While doing our research about this Stuart, as proper faux press always should, we also realised he's a great Nina Žižić impersonator, as shown in this video. We approve. Just a pity we didn't have our dubstep sign at the ready.

Friday evening rehearsals

Still a bit goosbumpy after seeing Moldova in the hall, but anyway...

IRELAND
Those of you who will be seated close to the catwalk are in for a treat, as the dancers will be bodhráning right above you throughout the intro and first verse, much of this isn't caught on camera unfortunately.

Not much has changed from their first rehearsals - a lot of choreography involving the dancers on the drums (looks great), the actual drummer playing about with the red-illuminated hive of bombos (fits the act), and very shiny people - the dancers' oily torsos and Ryan's jacket (not sure about this...). The biggest problem here remains the backing singers being too loud in the mix. But we gave up on them fixing this because they seem to think it's a good idea.

A bit of pyro towards the end now (a smidge of fireworks blowing up from behind and then in front of them), not really helping it, but it's nice to see a bit of yellow among all this black and red I suppose.

CYPRUS
Again, not much to say about this one. The intro with the spotlight behind Despoyna looks nice, and the Sara Varga split screen thing works well. And I like her shiny earrings. And with full makeup now, some viewers might wonder what the Slovenian singer is doing on stage again.

BELGIUM
A very dark setting, combined with Roberto's black suit and the dancers' black dresses, there's a lot of floating heads going on. He sings well and the sound mix is great. The press area chuckled when the dancers were wriggling about with their hands fixed on their crotches (or was it an "I'm pregnant" dance?), but otherwise the choreography comes across fine. And there was the mandatory DUBSTEP moment during the DUBSTEP:

This song feels very much at home in this MF semi arena, but Roberto's terrified child look (whether he's actually terrified or just naturally looking like this) remains its biggest problem, and this one's still very hard to call.

SERBIA
We didn't see the first runthrough, just the photo of the swirly coloured butterfly on screens. Not much different from what Moje3 looked like on Tuesday when I think of it...

We see them now, and yes, they look the same. It sounds great, but the cameras are still quite a mess, as well as the lighting, with some of them that are supposed to be in focus left in the dark. This needs a lot of work, and time is running out... We'll probably still see this on Saturday, but I wouldn't be saying this if this wasn't Serbia and sung last in a small semi. Hmm.

Getting into business

In our quest to test out the various facilities, we have now officially had a go at the press centre printers. We felt it was fittingly retro. But then, what to print?

A photo of a cat looking at iPhone covers with pictures of itself on them, of course.

A sign with DUBSTEP also seemed vital, for those earth-shattering, crucial moments, so it simply had to be done. Photographic evidence to come! We're just waiting for some dubstep. I don't think Moldova has added any since their first rehearsals...

Wednesday morning rehearsals

It must have been a rough night, as I opened my computer to find the lyrics of Sku' du spørg' fra no'en open in my browser. But anyway, to the rehearsals:

Latvia

Well, they're very glittery. That's not a bad thing. They're vocally better than I remembered - I assume it's partly due to Eirodziesma sound being poor and partly thanks to the backing singers know their job. The most remarkable part of the choreography is them (the two PeRs, the guitarist and the keyboardist) doing some kind of pretend high gravity slow motion soldier march on the catwalk during the DUBSTEP. The rest of it is mostly them jumping about. If you're the kind of person who likes singers you don't know asking you to make a noise (twice!) during the song, you might like this. The guitarist has a tablet device and a shiny hard Latvian flag on (or instead of?) guitar. I'm pretty certain this has never been done before.

Third go and the pretend audience (the actual human ones, not the Spock cardboards) are carrying the stagediving lead singer towards the end. I'm hoping for something like this - quite a similar song when I think of it. I hope Merethe is standing by.

Overall this makes perfect sense as an opener, kickstarty and the basses sound great. Still 3 minutes of noise to my ears, but they're making the best of it.

San Marino

The much awaited for choreography, but it's basically their preview video put onto a stage (well just the Valentina parts, no old woman wearing a paper bag sadly). Valentina holds the illuminating crystal ball, or gooseberry or whatever, but when she sets it down there's a rather noticeable hole in the bottom for the battery to go in. The change of rhythm part involves the silent backing dancers coming to life and helping her strip into the red sheet - it's all very red from that moment on. It's also very, very Andorran. Her vocals are fine, but I can't stop expecting Anabel Conde to come behind her and add some shrieks.

Second runthrough lasted about thirty seconds, Monetta had some sort of problem, possibly with her glowball, and asked the director to stop. They didn't stop though, for another twenty seconds or so. Rude.

Third go lasted all three minutes. On closer attention to the backing dancers, they're starting lying face down and folded, then raising very slowly as if they're doing some sort of yoga. After the beatchange they have their own (smaller) red sheets and are basically two mini-Valentinas. Overall it seems that they've learned of last year's mistake of overchoreography, but Valentina still seems too focused on her vocals to actually interact with the cameras.

Last runthrough and there's a bit more camera interaction this time - they must be aware of the fact that they really need to work on this. But they still have a long way to go.

Macedonia

Song begins with the camera sneaking behind Vlatko - pretty effective and almost gives the impression that this is going to be a normal song. The rest is the mess we knew it was going to be - although some of this can be improved with rehearsals. Esma better change her purple dress, at the moment it completely blends in the purple background and all we we see is her floating head, and the accreditation badges hanging on her wrist. The sound mix of the backing singers and the beat is a pain to my ears and needs a lot of work too. On the bright side, Esma herself sounds a lot better than she did in Amsterdam and Vlatko's voice is as great as always.

The feed was off for most of the second run-through, so we just looked at funny pictures of cats during it, until we finally got the last few  leleleleleleleleleleleleleleleles of the song. The only impression I could get is that they're still very much experimenting with the staging.

Third go with some more attention to the sound - this is definitely a different backing track to what I remember, much more electronic (even during his parts). I guess it's ready for the clubs, but not quite sure yet if the new mix works for the better overall. The backing singers are supporting Esma during much of her actual lyrics part - good idea, I think. Vlatko had a few problems with his earpiece, but overall an improvement on the first run and the press theatre liked this.

Last runthrough and it all seems much more competent now, with Esma having more charisma in her little finger than much of the acts we've seen put together. I'm still not sure about that sound mix though. At least there's no DUBSTEP...

Azerbaijan

Well, now we know what happened to the I from Sylvia Vrethammar's magic SYLVIA glass letters. It stayed in Malmö Arena, and a man got into it. And Fərid is sitting on top of it, with the man reflecting everything Fərid does for much of the song (invertedly. Upside down. Scary stuff).

Later the glass box becomes the Crystal Dome, the trapped man apparently collected four crystals and had twenty seconds of pink confetti swirling around him. He didn't catch any. Oh, and there was some girl wearing a long red sheet. Oh, and Fərid was as charming as always and perfect vocally, but almost nobody seemed to notice that because of the shock of everything else going on. The commentators (in countries where they're allowed humour) are going to love this.

Second go and little has changed - they've obviously rehearsed this for months to the very detail, the dancer's movements are in perfect synch with Fərid's. The sheet/trail on the girl's red dress is as long as the catwalk, literally. A much bigger sheet than San Marino (I mean Valentina's sheet, not the country) (actually the country too).

Third time with some more attention to sound mix - the backing singers are almost invisible, I only got a tiny glimpse of them (three, I think) in the dark background. But they're very much there - and they're helping him most (if not all) the time. And it's done quite well too, considering it took me so long to even notice their presence.

Last go added smoke on the stage - a nice touch I think. The glass box has become full of fingerprints by now. And after getting over the initial shock, I'm loving this a lot. Lunch time now, Sild and his banana socks will take over after me.

Tuesday morning rehearsals

Well, good morning! We are set for a new day of madness, and have been moved to a bigger cinema for viewing today. My shoes are off and I'm ready to go!

You've all read Sam, Yair and Martin's reports from yesterdays rehearsals, of course, and I don't think I have a lot to add to that, apart from BWAHAHAHAHA to Ukraine. And for one that have been doubting Denmark big parts of the season, it did seem to work very nicely yesterday. Should definitely do well, and the falling pyro and glittery confetti works wonders for it, but it's by no means a new Loreen.

Biggest improvement from my original impression of the entries yesterday was Estonia for me, which is odd, since it was just as expected... OH, and Montenegro is starting!

MONTENEGRO
The two lads are wearing some sort of spacesuits that make them look like two Michelin men, whereas our diacriticed friend Nina Žižić is dressed like an electric bee (true story!). This is a big burp of fresh air, really, no matter what you think of it, and it looks pretty much as expected on stage, and fairly authentic. Stands out a mile, and positively too, but I'm still not convinced enough people will actually vote for it.

The background looks nice and flashy in yellow-ish green, so I'm sold, of course. I'm easy.

And the Michelin men now turned into proper astronauts for the second run-through! Emerging out of smoke at the start, looking surprisingly neat, actually. Just to underline how out of line with the rest these boys are!

BELGIUM
Roberto starts off with an absolutley terrified and distant look in his eyes in the first shot, but then again, that's nothing new. Other than that it's looking quite nice, really! There's two female dancers showing up out of nowhere from behind, complete with Hold-on-be-strong-No-one-style hand moves and all, making it all look pretty dishy. Can they take over, as he clearly doesn't want to be there...?

Would it be very Terry Wogan of me to say that it's during songs like this you notice how nice the set is...? It truly is for this one - a cold and blue feel. Starts off with the condom lamps on stage, but they eventually disappear, and we have bits from the lyrics being projected in the back. I think the best bit it is during the DUBSTEP, though, when it turns into more generic patterns bouncing along to the beat.

All in all, I'm assuming the Belgians are pleased with this - they have every reason to be, at least.

BELARUS
Giant discoball UFO containing Alyona alert!!

It opens, and there she is! The concept sounds ridiculous, but it doesn't actually look as kitchen sink-y as it might sound in the end, with the discoball working as a background prop all the way through. Colours are in silvery and orange, which looks very good, and the choreography is pretty much the same as their video - WE HAVE INWARD CHA CHA CLAP! #win

So based on the first run-through, the performance looks good (or the idea of it) and she sings well, but other than that, it gave a rather empty and undone feel, and they're lucky there's still lots of time... Most of all, they look a bit confused and unfocused, and Alyona downright terrified at times. But then again, who cares when both her dancers are dishy.

Second run-through, and we have smiles! And the whole thing generally looking quite a bit better already. I'm wriggling my toes as we speak, unsurprisingly.

Smoke and pyro added to the beginning in last run-through, both to a pretty good effect, I thought, as was the fire throughout. CHA CHA HEY

MOLDOVA
It seems I missed the first nibble of Pasha and Lady Tottington due to needing a wee... Ooops. All set for the next try!

And here we go... And she's back on Romanian, it seems, unlike the mix on the first run-through. Pasha is joined on his piano stool by three dancer boys in the first shot, doing some weird wave. Odd, but sweet too, somehow. They are still doing their great Yaz bitti-moves behind her and... OH, she's going up-up-up-up! Her massive dress is clearly hiding a Sarah Dawn Finer styled lift, and raising for the big finish, which she sings rather flawlessly. This should be sailing through if this is anything to go by, my neckhair went up! Which reminds me, I should book that haircut...

Also, WHERE IS HER HAIR
